The #21DayPhotoChallengeSA is an exciting initiative designed to challenge your creativity, expand your photographic skills, and celebrate the richness and beauty of African culture and landscapes. Over the course of 21 days, immerse yourself in the art of photography and discover new perspectives as you capture moments that inspire, provoke a passion for Africa and its people.

How Does It Work?

Participation is simple! Each day, for 21 consecutive days, a new theme will be announced. Your task is to interpret the theme creatively and snap a photo that encapsulates your interpretation. Whether it's capturing the vibrant hues of a sunset, the bustling energy of a city street, or the serene beauty of nature, let your imagination go wild!

Rules:

  1. Original Work: All submitted photos must be the original work of the participant.
  2. Daily Themes: Participants must follow the designated theme for each day of the challenge.
  3. Submission Deadline: Photos must be submitted by 11:59 PM South Africa Standard Time (SAST) on the day of the corresponding theme.
  4. Technical Specifications: Submitted photos should be in JPEG format and should not exceed 20 MB in size.
  5. Editing: Basic editing, such as cropping, adjusting brightness, contrast, and color balance, is allowed. However, excessive manipulation that alters the integrity of the original photo is not permitted.
  6. Number of Entries: Participants may submit unlimited photos per day for each theme of the challenge.
  7. Respect and Ethics: Photos must adhere to ethical standards and respect the dignity and privacy of individuals depicted.
  8. Copyright: By submitting their photos, participants grant permission for their work to be featured in promotional materials related to the challenge, with appropriate credit given to the photographer.
 

Submission Instructions:

  1. Submission Platform: Photos should be submitted to www.colorspace.co.za
  2. File Naming: Please name your files.
  3. Caption: Include a brief caption or description with each submitted photo, providing context or insights into your interpretation of the theme.

Judging criteria

  • Creativity (0-10 points):

    • Originality: How unique and innovative is the approach to the theme?
    • Interpretation: How creatively does the photographer interpret and express the theme?
    • Conceptualization: How well does the photo convey the photographer's creative vision?

  • Technical Skill (0-10 points):

    • Focus: Is the main subject of the photo in sharp focus?
    • Exposure: Are the exposure settings well-balanced, with details visible in both highlights and shadows?
    • Sharpness: Is the image clear and free of blur or distortion?
    • Depth of Field: Is the depth of field appropriate for the subject, enhancing the composition?
    • Use of Light: How effectively is natural or artificial light utilized to enhance the mood and atmosphere of the photo?

  • Composition (0-10 points):

    • Framing: Is the subject well-framed within the composition, drawing the viewer's eye to the focal point?
    • Rule of Thirds: Does the composition adhere to the rule of thirds, creating visual balance and interest?
    • Leading Lines: Are there leading lines or visual pathways that guide the viewer's gaze through the image?
    • Balance: Is the composition well-balanced, with harmonious elements distributed throughout the frame?
    • Negative Space: How effectively is negative space used to enhance the overall composition?

  • Storytelling (0-10 points):

    • Narrative: Does the photo tell a compelling story or evoke a strong emotional response?
    • Emotion: How effectively does the photo convey the intended mood or emotion?
    • Context: Is there context provided within the image that helps to deepen the viewer's understanding or connection to the subject?
    • Engagement: Does the photo engage the viewer and invite them to explore further or contemplate its meaning?

  • Adherence to Theme (0-10 points):

    • Relevance: How closely does the photo align with the theme of the day?
    • Creativity within Theme: Does the photo offer a unique or unexpected interpretation of the theme?
    • Consistency: Is the theme clearly conveyed throughout the photo, from subject choice to composition and storytelling elements?
